Norwegian Cruise Lines Norwegian Spirit sailed through bad weather off the coast of South Carolina enroute To New York.
On the return trip, from Totola To New York, while off the coast of South Carolina, the cruise ship Norwegian Spirit sailed through bad weather on January 19, 2006.
The ship was battered by high winds and waves estimated at over 50 feet as they reached the fifth floor of ship. About a dozen rooms were flooded when their windows were busted out. One passenger said the water rose to knee level in their cabin, and much of their clothes and belongs were washed out to sea.
The cruise line quickly moved passengers in the affected cabins to other cabins and offered a free cruise in the future to those affected.
Many passengers were severely frightened by the event, and felt like would never see land again. Norwegian Cruise Line said this type of severe weather is common this type of year.
